On Sunday, Pfizer said that it had received a "nonsurgical" prescription from Canada to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The drug is already available in Canada, but is being considered for sale in the US.

"This is the first of its kind in the world to be legally able to sell prescription drugs without a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Mark Thompson, Pfizer's executive vice president of international product marketing.
The Canadian company, which has about 20 employees in the United States and Canada, said it is taking a "nonsurgical" approach to its product. It will continue to sell Viagra as a generic drug in the U. and in Canada. In addition, it will make a new drug called Viagra from Canada. It will have Viagra in the same bottle as Viagra in Canada.
Viagra is the first drug to treat erectile dysfunction in men, but it does not treat erectile dysfunction in women.
"Viagra is not going to be a medicine that would be safe and effective for women," said Dr. Catherine Blanquer, a spokeswoman for Pfizer. "It is a new drug that will save patients time and money."
Pfizer says it was "stunning" when the Canadian company was able to sell Viagra, the same drug that was approved by the FDA in 1998.
"In the vast majority of men who have taken it for erectile dysfunction, it does not improve their condition and it does not cause sexual problems," said Pfizer CEO Sir John Thompson.
Viagra is currently available only through a prescription from a doctor.
But there's been some confusion about whether Viagra would be a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. The drug is designed to treat erectile dysfunction in men, but it's also designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges.
"There are no drugs to treat erectile dysfunction in men, nor will there be any erectile dysfunction drugs in the U. S.," said Thompson, a Pfizer executive.
Thompson is now considering a change in the treatment plan.
"We're going to be taking the step of changing our treatment plan," he said.
There are also risks associated with the drug, including the possibility of heart attack, stroke, blood clots and kidney problems. "This is a very serious and very serious problem for men," Thompson said.
Pfizer says that the Canadian drugstore will continue to sell generic Viagra.
The Canadian company, which has more than 20 employees in the U. S., said that it has been reviewing the safety of Viagra and that it will not sell any generic Viagra.
It's not clear how much it will cost, but Thompson said that the price could be more than $5 per pill.
